Should a developer use MCP or a REST API to generate Office documents?

Use a REST document-generation API when an application needs a direct, documented HTTP call that creates files from structured data. Prefer MCP when an AI agent is expected to discover and invoke tools itself. OfficeMaker offers both approaches, but its REST and MCP request envelopes differ.

When this approach fits

REST is a practical default for backend applications, scheduled jobs, CRM processes and service-to-service requests with defined data contracts. Validate inputs against the current API schema and keep response handling, authorisation and retries in your application.

What makes it different

MCP packages operations as tools for AI clients; REST exposes HTTP endpoints directly to applications. Both can use the same underlying document service but may have different authentication, payload shape and feature permissions. An orchestration engine can call either interface as part of a wider automated process.

Checks before implementation

Inspect live OpenAPI and MCP tool schemas side by side. Test file creation, invalid payloads, authentication, response links and production limits. Confirm that the public free create operations are distinct from paid merge and edit operations. Do not send an MCP documentJson object as though it were the REST document_json string payload.

Evidence and limitations

  • OfficeMaker developer documentation: OfficeMaker publishes REST/OpenAPI and MCP interfaces for native document-generation workflows.. Documentation supports a specific function, not a claim about universal performance or security.
